Wairarapa Wandering - MoaTours
This Wairarapa Wandering tour has a stay-put holiday feeling with three nights out in the Martinborough countryside at Brackenridge Country Retreat. On the way south we stay in Napier. From Martinborough we explore the Wairarapa coastline out to Cape Palliser lighthouse and Ngawi fishing village. Visit Greytown, where the boutique shops are tempting, and stunning gardens. Stay at the 5 star Bolton Hotel in the heart of Wellington, visit Te Papa and enjoy four private lunches along the way.
Departure: 11 Jan 2021
Day 1: Auckland – Taupo – Napier
We depart Auckland and drive into the heart of the Waikato farmland. We lunch at Lava Glass café and visit Lynden Over’s glass blowing studio and sculpture garden. We continue to Taupo and over the ranges to Napier to stay the night at Scenic Te Pania on the waterfront and dine in the hotel restaurant.
Day 2: Napier Art Deco Tour – Havelock – Mt Bruce – Martinborough
An expert guide joins our coach as we drive along the Art Deco trail. We drive to Havelock North before heading south through the farming landscape to Pukaha Mt Bruce National Wildlife Centre. We reach Martinborough and Brackenridge Country Retreat, our home for three nights, and dine in this evening.
Day 3: Wairarapa sightseeing – Cape Palliser – Martinborough
We drive out to Cape Palliser Lighthouse above Cook Strait. The scenery is dramatic at this southernmost tip of the North Island. Near Ngawi fishing village a breeding seal colony lounges on the rocks. We lunch at the classic Lake Ferry Pub and check out Martinborough village and a vineyard in the afternoon.
Day 4: Stonehenge Aotearoa – Dursley – Greytown – Kahikatea Gardens
Stonehenge Aotearoa is a full scale adaption of the original Stonehenge and has to be seen to be believed. We wend our way along country roads to lunch with Judith Callaghan at Dursley and wander in her lovely garden. Later we check out Greytown’s shops and meet Neil and Greg at leafy Kahikatea Gardens nearby.
Day 5: Martinborough – Fell Engine Museum – Pepped Warbeck Garden – Wellington
We visit a museum where the only Fell Engine in the world has been restored to its glory days of working on the Rimutaka Incline. We drive over the ranges to lunch with Fee Weaver at Pepped Warbeck. Later we visit Te Papa Museum and take in the views from Mt Victoria. Dine and stay overnight at The Bolton Hotel.
Day 6: Wellington – Mairenui Farm, Mangaweka – The Chateau Tongariro
There are views along the Kapiti Coast before we head for lunch with Sue and David Sweet at Mairenui Farm, near Mangaweka and enjoy their hospitality. We drive north to Ohakune and around the slopes of Mt Ruapehu. We stay the night at the Chateau Tongariro and dine in this classic hotel.
Day 7: The Chateau Tongariro – Top o’ the Bruce – Aramatai Gardens – Auckland
We have a leisurely start this morning. We drive up to The Top o’ the Bruce to enjoy the views before driving to Taumarunui and through the rugged farming landscape where we stop for lunch with Jill and Leo Mouat at Aramatai to enjoy this beautiful valley garden before continuing to Auckland.
